Uniform of the Volunteer Rifleman c1890

The infantry members of the Regiment in the c1890's wear pure wool scarlet jackets with contrasting green collars and cuffs.  Trousers are dark blue with a half inch red stripe gathered at the ankle with black leather gaiters. The waist belt and cartridge pouches are white leather and of the Slade-Wallace pattern. The helmet is a white foreign service pattern (NB in the 1880's a blue home pattern helmet was worn) with silver (volunteer type) fittings. The helmet crest is surmounted by the typical spike. Buttons are silver (volunteer type) with a embossed swan. Helmet plates are silver for troops, gold for officers and depict the swan, the 5 stars and the motto ("VIGILINS"). Troops (enlisted and NCO's) are armed with Pattern 1871 Martini-Henry cartridge rifles and Pattern 1871 socket bayonets.  Officers and senior NCO's are armed with Pattern 1822 infantry officers swords.
